Winning A Halloween Costume Contest

Winning A Halloween Costume Contest

by Phil Sikes

After years and years of watching other people walk away from Halloween parties with the coveted Most Creative Halloween Costume prize, you are going to make sure that you win this year. But, how are you going to make that happen? Read on to get some great ideas to think about so that you can make your best costume ever.

My best strategy for winning a Halloween costume contest is to be overtly original. If you buy your costume off the rack either online or off, you’re pretty much doomed to failure. If they’ve seen it, they’ve seen it! Originality is everything here, and you can’t afford to be like the crowd if you want to win the contest!

My favorite way to win is to come up with someone famous who is in the news recently, probably not for their charitable work either! Capitalizing on their misfortune is - well it’s exactly what you want to do here! Chances are, they did it to themselves, and we as fans owe it to them to keep them on the public’s radar! Some ideas of just how this would work could include for instance, Lindsay Lohan looking for a fix; Paris Hilton in jail house garb, (fully accessorized, of course!); Michael Vick hauling his dead dog behind him (fake, of course); or perhaps the Obama girl.

This type of costume can work out extremely well. Unfortunately, it can also completely fail if other people are not able to recognize you easily. If you do not naturally look anything like the celebrity that you are trying to dress as, you will need to invest a lot of effort into your make up and hair so you can make the costume believable.

A good costume does not stop at the clothing either. Having a truly creative costume will mean that you become the person, even acting and talking like they would.

You need to choose a costume based off of a person that you will be able to imitate comfortably. For example, if you normally dress quite conservatively, but you decide to go to a Halloween party dressed as Britney Spears wearing one of her skimpy outfits, you will need to seriously think about whether or not you will be able to act in character comfortably. The same goes if your body is dramatically different from the celebrity you plan to dress like.

If you are going as a couple, just be sure and not do what everyone else has done before. Originality wins, particularly in couples contests!

Make sure you have some fun! That’s the bottom line here in all of this. If you come up with a great costume but aren’t enjoying both the process and the contest, then what’s the point?
