When choosing an outdoor sport to spend some time in the great escapes of the world, backpacking and hiking are the best of all possible choices. Getting in touch with nature and viewing the world from a spot that is secluded and wonderful are great choices for individuals and families. When preparing for backpacking or hiking, it is important to being along some true essentials in order to make for the safest possible trip one can prepare for.

The suns rays. The sun can be very damaging to many parts of the body. When backpacking or hiking, the sun can be in contact with the skin and eyes the entire day spent walking. Sunscreen that is waterproof and of an SPF of 30 or more can provide just enough protection for the skin. The eyes, on the other hand, are the body parts left unprotected. Including a pair or two of sunglasses in every pack will help to make the trip easy to see and safer for the eyes.

Be safe. Safety is another huge concern when backpacking or hiking. Letting others in your group know where you are in case of an accidental separation is easy with a whistle. The time of the year when the backpacking or hiking trip is taking place will determine which type of whistle is needed. For winter months a plastic whistle with no “pea” is just right to prevent the “pea” from freezing or the whistle from freezing to your lips.

Water, water and more water. Many beginning backpacking or hiking people think the water they need to take is always in the liquid form. But, that is not the best choice when trying to keep your pack light. Today there are many water filtration systems that can filter anything and everything from the water. These are perfect to use as a backup when the liquid of life has run out when backpacking or hiking.

Starting a fire. For those overnight trips, a firestarter or set of waterproof matches are ideal for a little warmth and a warm meal. But, many backpacking and hiking trips are only day trips and the backpacking and hiking team feel they may not need these things. One the contrary, as a safety measure, every member should include a way to start a fire in their packing essentials.

Treating Injuries. Even though every backpacking or hiking trip would ideally be without injury, no one can assure this will happen. A first aid kit needs to be prepared for every pack, not just one. Carrying an individual first aid kit is the right choice just in case one of the people backpacking or hiking gets separated from the rest of the group. The first aid kit should include a pocket knife and pocket tool set, as well as the general first aid supplies.

Finding your way. When in an environment that is not native, there needs to be a way to stay on track with the trail. This is especially important just in case a member or two gets lost from the rest of the backpacking and hiking team. A compass and a map needs to be included in every pack. Today, there are even GPS locators that can be used when traveling through nature on foot.

Hiking and backpacking are great ways to get a little physical activity and become better acquainted with nature and life outside. Together as a team, the backpacking and hiking group needs to make sure that every pack includes these essentials as a base and build the pack from there.

by Andrew Caxton

The experienced professionals at an Iowa skydiving center can help the beginner get started in one of the most exciting sports around.

Most people would choose such states as California or Florida (even some of the mid-Atlantic states) as leading the way in skydiving and other thrill sports. But to their surprise, Iowa is one of the leaders in what has been called the “adventure sports industry.” In fact, Iowa skydiving has numerous top-quality, reputable skydiving centers that provide hundreds with the opportunity to enjoy this breathtaking sport.

Many consider skydiving extreme, but for many it is a choice, a way of life that is not extreme at all. But for just about everyone who experiences the thrill of jumping from an airplane and drifting to the ground under a parachute, the memories last a lifetime.

Iowa Skydiving Centers

The experienced professionals at the various Iowa skydiving centers help beginners and old hands face fear and welcome the challenge of this great sport. Check with Iowa Skydiving, one of the most recognized names in the state, along with Skydiving Iowa, or check with Skydiving.com to locate other top parachuting and skydiving centers in this Midwestern state. Join the thousands who have chosen jump masters and instructors in Iowa skydiving to get an adventure unrivaled by just about any other activity.

For example, skydiving centers in such populated areas as Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Davenport and Sioux City, offer tandem skydiving, a beginning method that involves making a jump while harnessed to an instructor. These centers also provide a program called Accelerated Free Fall, a quick way to become certified as a skydiver. These jumps are made with some assistance from instructors, then a follow up video and discussion help the student getting a mental image of what took place. These safe jumps also include an automatic activation device on the parachute that will deploy the chute in case of emergency. Accelerated Free Fall training includes intensive ground training, usually up to five hours initially.

While costs for training and for additional jumps vary from center to center, typical prices for a tandem jump will be about $180 to $210. Group rates can reduce this cost. Follow up jumps will cost about $50 to $60. Videos of jumps are also available, with prices ranging from $45 to $75. Accelerated Free Fall programs range from $140 to $275, depending on the level of instruction. Experienced jumpers may arrange for service by contacting the supervisors at any location. Some sites even offer coupons after the first tandem jump that will save the individual money on a future session.

So, if you are in or near the Hawkeye state and want to experience the thrill of skydiving, contact a pro at one of the many Iowa skydiving centers. Hundreds have and nearly everyone goes back for more!

Hiking provides millions of people with a great deal of pleasure and a sense of adventure each year and 99% of the time it is anything but dangerous. However, people do get lost and have accidents every now and a again and it can become a dangerous activity very quickly if you are not prepared.

Here we look at are just 4 simple safety tips to ensure that your hiking trips don’t get you into difficulty.

Safety Tip No1 – Consider taking a partner of friend along.

There’s really no need to worry about setting off by yourself if you’re taking a short hike in a nearby area on easy terrain, however, if you are hiking through heavily wooded wilderness areas with winding trails and steep canyons then the likelihood of getting lost or sustaining injury becomes very real and you should think carefully about whether or not it is sensible to head out alone.

Taking a partner along has many advantages, especially if that individual is a seasoned hiker. Obviously, ‘two heads are better than one’ and if you do become lost or run into difficulty you’re far less likely to panic if you have somebody with you to help solve the problem.

Safety Tip No 2 – Ensure that someone knows where you’re going.

If you are a novice hiker then you ought to certainly stick to clearly marked and well traveled routes and ought not to stray from these routes to explore until you have gained some experience and have had an opportunity to learn and practice the basics of map and compass work. However, it will not be too long before you’re ready to tackle some more adventurous routes and the possibility of getting injured or lost will arise.

As a consequence, you should always tell somebody where you are going and when you plan to return so that they can dispatch a search party if you don’t return when expected.

Safety Tip No 3 – Take along some basic equipment.

It’s essential to carry a basic survival kit with you and your local hiking club will give you advice on the items which this should include. What we’re looking at here are things like a lighter and matches, a good knife, a first aid kit and a flashlight.

It is also a good idea to have a map and compass with you and a fully charged cell phone.

Safety Tip No 4 – Take some basic provisions with you.

Water or other fluids such as sports drinks are essential as you can lose a great deal of fluid even over a short period of time on a hot day. You should note though that water is bulky, so take enough but not too much. Don’t forget though that you must not drink from local streams as natural water sources may appear to be inviting but they are often filled with bacteria and may make you sick very quickly.

Also take enough food to last you. It is no fun to be hungry while you are out hiking but remember that you can last a good deal longer without food than without water.

Boating is a big industry in this country and boats range from sailboats to fishing boats to leisure boats. One thing that every boat owner has in common is that they take care of their boats the same way most people take care of their cars. As with car care, boat care is a big business industry all its own.

Most folk desire to keep their pride and joy looking, that’s a fact. But what do we mean when we talk about boat care? Well it can be anything from waxing the hull to filling in major scrapes. Boat care is a primary issue in the overall scheme of things and it’s nearly as important as knowing how to navigate one!

If you don’t care for your boat it can let you down in the most disastrous of situations such as the middle of the ocean 100 miles from shore.

Let’s start off by looking at waxes and cleaners that are available on the market today. It is important to choose the right cleaner for your type of boat and storage. Saltwater boats and freshwater boats often require different kinds of cleaning to ensure the longevity of the boat. It is also proper boat care to wash and wax your boat thoroughly before putting it into storage.

This will enable your boat to be more easily ready for use when the time is right to take the boat out again.

Boat Care Products.

You, as a consumer, must do some level of research in order to obtain the best product for your boat as there are many available. Obtaining a decent soap is the primary concern for you.

A good soap will clean every surface inside and out and will not remove any protective wax coating, but it will remove any stubborn dirt residue from the boat.

Your cleaning kit should have, at a minimum, a good spray cleaner that can remove from the surface of your boat all manner of things such as fish blood, bird droppings and grease.

If you fail to get these type of stains off it could damage your boat in the longer term. Another helpful cleaning and protectiuve product is a good wax. It helps protect the surface of your craft and keeps the natural color.

Saltwater boats can experience build up and corrosion of their paint. Freshwater boats experience mold from the algae and slime found in lake water. These are just a few of the products needed for proper boat care. A good rule of thumb is to always research which products are right for your particular boat.

by Peter Wilson

For some, there is one question that is uncomfortable when asked. For a few, this question is even disturbing because it threatens the positive impact that ecotourism can have on the tourism industry and on the world environment. But some have asked the question nonetheless: Is ecotourism becoming a problem, or is it almost entirely beneficial?

There is a large segment of the population that knows little or nothing about the concept of ecotourism. The members of this segment of society generally participate in more traditional mass/recreation tourism, basing their travels in a city and giving no thought to the natural resources that are being exploited. There is, however, a portion of the world population that is quite aware of the ecotourism concept and they want to understand the idea more fully so they can decide for themselves if this segment of the tourism industry is a good thing or a bad thing.

It might be wise to begin with a fundamental understanding of ecotourism. Only then can the thought process move on to whether it is a good influence or a negative influence on the resources and cultures of the planet.

Those who take part in ecotourism travel to a selected destination so that they can experience the culture, wildlife and scenery the site has to offer. Most ecotourism participants are committed, socially conscious individuals who want an adventure that involves preserving resources and even restoring some of the areas to their natural state. Ecotourism gives travelers the opportunity to grow personally, through an experience that cannot be duplicated.

Ecotourism has its roots in the idea of individual travelers being socially, culturally and environmentally informed so that they can avoid having a negative impact on their surroundings. In addition, these travelers try to enhance the integrity of destinations and encourage the traditional cultures of local populations.

With this type of individual involved, can ecotourism really be a problem for the globe and its inhabitants? Some would say that this is not the case, because the vision of ecotourism is to help eliminate pollution and to celebrate diversity in nature and culture. Such actions can only be good for tourism as a whole, some would argue. If tourists walk, with backpacks, instead of driving, ecotourists would ask, isn’t that a positive impact?

There are some, however, who find that ecotourism is becoming a problem for others who enjoy nature. For example, some lifelong scuba divers are encountering a growing number of beginning divers who take to the sea because they feel they should enjoy and celebrate the magnificent aquatic life in our oceans. These experienced divers sometimes draw criticism from ecotourism proponents who believe that human beings should not scuba dive because it disturbs the natural flow and rhythm of the ocean dwellers.

Most clear-thinking individuals will come to their own conclusions, based on experiences within the ecotourism or mass tourism fields. For most, however, ecotourism is not a problem, because these individuals believe the activity is beneficial. There may be no clear-cut answer in this ongoing debate.
